AmeriCorps Vista Program
What is AmeriCorps VISTA?
AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965 and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 40 years.
What do VISTA Members Do?
VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more. With passion, commitment, and hard work, you’ll create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
What are VISTA Members doing at our United Way?
United Way of Southwest Georgia has partnered with AmeriCorps VISTA to bring valuable resources to our community. Three Volunteers have committed to serve full-time for one year at several area non-profit organizations including Faith Community Outreach Center, Network of Trust, and Strive to Thrive. With passion, commitment, and hard work, they will create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. The volunteers will focus on four main areas including capacity building, volunteer resources, fundraising and grant writing, and marketing. United Way plans to add up to six additional volunteers in the next 6-8 months who will be placed in similar non-profit workplaces to help fight poverty in our community.
